Opera tests cell phone OS

Opera Software says it has released a new test version of a Web browser for Symbian's EPOC operating system for next-generation cell phones and other mobile Internet access devices. Ericsson has released a Symbian cell phone; other Symbian supporters include Motorola, Nokia, Matsushita and Psion.

The beta version of the Opera 5.0 browser shares several features common on desktop computer browsers, including support for 128-bit encryption, Java and JavaScript programs, and version 4 of the Web's programming language, HTTP (Hyptertext Transfer Protocol). It also supports WAP (Wireless Application Protocol), software to optimize Internet information for cell phones.
