Go ahead, abuse this phone

If you're like me, and you're growing tired of the seemingly endless parade of thin, pretty cells, you'll be glad to know that not all new handsets look like contestants on Extreme Makeover. Take, for example, the new Casio GzOne, which is styled about as far from the Motorola Razr as you can get it. Rugged and durable, the GzOne features a plastic bumper on the bottom end of the front face that's designed to protect the phone if it's dropped. Rubber touches give the GzOne even more protection, and like Nextel's handsets, it promises to stand up to water and shocks. No, it's not pretty, but it goes a long way in making a statement against supermodel cell phones.

When I first saw the GzOne last month in UTStarcom's booth at CTIA, it was running on Verizon's network and bore the name "Type V." Though UTStarcom refused to confirm that the GzOne would end up at that carrier--not that I took their "no comment" seriously--rumors are now circulating that the GzOne will arrive at Verizon sometime this month. Reportedly it will carry a $300 price tag, which seems just a tad exorbitant even with the 2-megapixel camera and support for VZ Navigator.

Big Heavy and Ugly
by newmanra October 25, 2006 4:18 AM PDT
I saw this phone yesterday. Good thing it has armor on it. It is so big and heavy I nearly dropped it. This phone is the equivalent of putting big tires on a ford taurus and telling people it is made for off road use.

It's about time

I wish more carriers would tap into this market just as Nextel and looks like Verizon will. I like many people don't want a pretty phone, but one that won't break the first time it's accidentally dropped. I remember the good old days when cell phones were mostly made of metal and were nearly indestructible.

$300= ugly indestructible phone
by glittertoy October 25, 2006 5:52 AM PDT
its ugly but if it can take a beating then it caught my eye. life has been
getting really busy lately and my poor samsung is getting abused. who cares
what it looks like, if it can take abuse and not break it sounds perfect. the
only problem: i am tired of paying $300+ for a phone! i also am not willing to
switch service providers. maybe cingular will catch on, the price will go down
after the hype and i can finally have a phone that can take a A** kicking.
sweet!

Nextel I580
by jkmather October 25, 2006 7:21 AM PDT
My personal cell phone is the I580 by Nextel. It is water resistant, rugged enough to be approved for military use, coated with shock absorbing material that makes it easy to hold and use. Feels like something is in your hand not like you are holding a piece of cardboard. Lastly it is not ugly.

This is exactly the kind of phone I am looking for
by logangreer October 25, 2006 7:22 AM PDT
I agree that the phone companies should tap into this market. If they can come out with an iPod that is made from a single piece of aluminum pipe (mini, nano), then why can't phone companies come out with a phone with similar rugged materials?
Who cares about cameras and graphics and all that. I want a phone that stands up to abuse, sounds good when talking on it, and has decent battery life.
Not everyone buying phones is trying to look like a supermodel, or is a slick business man, or is a highschool girl. Give us MEN PHONES.

I am sticking with my nextel i730
by Pat Bonnar October 25, 2006 7:48 AM PDT
I am sticking with my nextel i730 till it bites the dust.
I have dropped it about 20 times.
I do not want a cheap camera on my phone.
I have a cheap 5 megapixel why would I want a 2?
I forward my calls and have used this since it first
came out. I do not want an ipod on my phone.
I want a phone with good reception and clear calls.
However Nextel is not national connect as they claim,
when I travel to the Texas panhandle shortly after
I leave OK City I am dead in the water.

Ford tough phone!
by mrkillerman October 25, 2006 8:08 AM PDT
lol Not made by ford but its tough and that's good because I know a lot of people who are tough on their phones. The throw them around and tear them up and complain about how it sounds and work. This one should be able to take the beating and stil work. Just the price tag that may hold them back from buying it.

Why this phone may not be popular.
by fishwealth October 25, 2006 8:15 AM PDT
I lost one phone dropped one in a puddle and another in a toilet. Now my husband insists on insurance and the silly thing. No matter how much I point out that it really depreciates fast. Just think how much the providers make on those insurance premiums from people like him. There's not a lot of incentive to make the phones indestructible.

ET-"Phone at home!".
by Major Pain51 October 25, 2006 8:28 AM PDT
Gad zukes! I don't even own a cell phone. Think back to the good old days when you could get away "from that D... phone". If I needed a cell phone for any good reason, I think first of all it has to be made to be used outdoors,BECAUSE we all have other phones inside! And doesn't it rain outside and who hasn't dropped some thing so d... small it's hard to use? Give me the cell phone retro handset, at least I can hold on to it!

Go ahead, abuse this phone
by W N W October 25, 2006 12:13 PM PDT
Man, I'd LOVE a phone that was a little more resistant to the forces that surround my life, but 300 bucks is a little too steep for me. I wonder if it's possible to design a phone that's tough, reasonably attractive, feature-packed and inexpensive? OK, fine: makes too much sense and probably everyone would want something like that. Never happen. Still You gotta wonder...

durability
by VsorayaV December 1, 2006 4:48 AM PST
i wish they would make a similarly durable phone without compromising style. that one looks like the Casio G-watches they came out with in the '90s. much as i'd need a heavy-duty phone, that one's style is just too, erm, cumbersome for my taste.
