The company announced the models on its Direct2Dell Web site and said they'll go on sale at www.dell.com/open by 2 p.m. PST Thursday.

The three models are the E520n desktop and the E1505n notebook, both with a starting price of $599, and the XPS 410n, with a starting price of $899. The move will fulfill a schedule the company committed to earlier this month.

Dell announced the Linux PC plan after being inundated with requests from potential customers. The Round Rock, Texas-based company has been trying to engage with customers as part of an effort to restore its flagging competitiveness.

Lionel Menchaca, digital media manager, touted the new systems as evidence of Dell's reform. "Thanks for giving us a chance to show what Dell 2.0 is about. While this is a milestone that a lot of us will remember, it's just the beginning--plenty more to come," he said.

..that Dell is both listening to consumers as well as not letting MS bully it into only providing Windows-based machines.

Shouldn't it be cheaper
by AlamoCandy May 24, 2007 8:24 AM PDT
Since the OS is free shouldn't it be cheaper? I just priced the exact same machine with Windows and the cost was the same!

Why would consumer pay the same price for a free peice of software???????

This the PATENT *FREE* OS - No violations here
by sixit May 25, 2007 6:40 AM PDT
Ubuntu is a stickler for not allowing software or content that is encumbered. I challenge anyone to prove otherwise, or to crawl back under the rock from whence they came.

And yes, I'm putting a laptop on my shopping list!

let hope their new venture succeeds

Well let hope this dell venture is successful.

As for the patent violations, well if Microsoft so sure that Linux violates their patents then why have they not all ready started legal proceedings and put in a court injunction stopping anyone selling Linux or services for Linux, Microsoft using their patent argument as marketing ploy to try to gain customers and put them of competitors. It is not the first time and probably not the last time they will used under handed tactics.

Running Ubuntu 7.04 in 1999 PC
by cliffroc May 27, 2007 10:12 AM PDT
Three weeks ago my friend gave me his 1999 Sony Viao with Pentinum II, 256 MB memory and Microsoft Windows 98. Windows 98 has no longer support by Microsoft anymore. I don't care for Windows 98 due to a reputation of problems and don't care for anti-virus and anti-spyware applications causing systme running extremely slow. I installed Ubuntu 7.04 Linux over Windows 98 and added USB Fast Ethernet. For past three weeks it runs so beautiful and very stable without a single problem. Of course, it runs a little slow but not bad. I am going to give it to my elderly mother who needs for email, browser and letters by OpenOffice. Good investment.
