This device from University of California at Berkeley transforms ambient vibrations and converts them to electrical energy, says Ph.D. candidate Elizabeth Reilly.

Someday it may power remote sensors and could be capable of generating 200 microwatts per square centimeter. Similar experiments on energy-harvesting devices are taking place at Georgia Tech, Intel and Germany's EnOcean.
