This will most likely be old news to most c/net readers but it is worth repeating for the new kids who might be thinking of starting a bot-net of their own.

The bigger the toes you step on the more likely someone will come after you!

It is all about the money. DOS attack a small time server or hi-jack a few hundred home PC's and nobody really cares. Cost someone big money and that is a different matter entirely.

Especially if they decide to make an example of you, you could get really screwed. And don't delude yourself into thinking that they will reward you with a big time security job. The days of Mr. Mitnick are gone.

Especially in todays world, if they want you bad enough they can get you, even in the a run down hotel in the Philippines.

If you must demonstrate your skills create your stuff and drop it into a chat-room somewhere so some other fool set it off.

I realize this will probably have no effect at all but it is worth a try.
