Microsoft is loosing because they are focussing on too many things.
And Yahoo looses because it was scared to innovate and infringe on Microsoft territories. So they planned to be small and eat the crumbs that Microsoft wasn't interested in. I remember when Microsoft killed Netscape and Yahoo's comment was "never compete with Microsoft". The thing is Google competed and look where they are.
