Opera updates browser for Symbian

July 13, 2005
Opera Software is temporarily offering the paid version of its browser for free, as part of its 10th anniversary celebration, the company announced Tuesday.

Complimentary registration codes for Opera 8 are being given away until midnight Tuesday. The license is good for the life of that particular browser, said Michelle Valdivia, a marketing communications manager for Opera.

Opera 8, which launched in April, normally sells for $39 per license.

"This is a surprise gift for anyone coming to the party," Valdivia said.

The company's anniversary party site includes games, the history of Opera's browser, downloadable music by Opera employees, and an area to chat with Opera Chief Executive Jon von Tetzchner.

"On this day, we celebrate our users," Tetzchner said in a statement.

The Oslo, Norway-based company began in 1995 as a research project at Norwegian telecom company Telenor. Opera develops and markets browsers for desktops, mobile phones and home entertainment devices.

Happy Birthday Opera!

I wish you even more success for the future.

Upon activation from my free version of Opera 8, the ads immediately disappeared, giving a little more usuable screen space.

Thanks!

Very generous, Great software

I'm a longtime Opera user, and it's simply the best browser out there. It has the fewest vulnerabilities, works on just about any OS, scales graphics seamlessly. It's very cool software and quite generous of them to give away reg codes for a full day. I received mine without any problems.
