The driving force behind movie theaters is our appetite for bragging rights to claim "yeah, that new movie, I saw it..."
Video rentals charge between $3-$5 after sales tax. You're more than likely to buy that same dvd for less than $7 at your local Wal-Mart or Target. So, I see why brick and mortar video renters could be worried. And, we haven't even included NetFlix or Blockbuster.com.
It's a very interesting market, and it goes to prove that customers have the last voice.
