Restricted usage of personal finances? Bah!
by September 11, 2004 8:00 AM PDT
After reading this article, I have decided to let my PayPal account ROT - not that there was much in the account to begin with, but I'll not be using it anymore...ever.

I can understand PayPal's wishes to distance themselves from Online Gambling, Porn and Drug Distribution - However - Levying a fine against someone for spending THEIR OWN MONEY on an item they desire is simply wrong. PayPal is not the modern-day god of commerce they envision themselves as.

The finances contained in a persons account is theirs to spend as they wish - and no company or agency, regardless of their position in society, has a right to dictate what an individual can and cannot purchase with their personal finances. This is a non-negotiable point - argue amongst yourselves if you wish about this, it won't change the positioning of my statement.

When I work I get paid. When I get paid I deposit funds into an account - and when I want to buy an item, I don't ask permission from my bank first, it's just plainly understood that my money is mine to spend as I wish.

Now, if PayPal wants to levy fines against the BUSINESSES which use it's services to accept payments, that's an entirely different thing...but they make a decent ammount of money from their business transactions - so why would they slap down the vendor?

Looks like they just added an extra way to charge customers cash...They'll accept their percentage from both paties for the transaction, and then an extra fine if it's considered PayPal Contraband - against the person buying....

Perhaps our local police forces should throw people who buy illegal street drugs in jail and let the pushers run free too...Hey, if paypal is doing it, it must be the right thing to do!

To PayPal : Call your lawyers - you're bound to have some very angry people suing your pants off...You have no right to tell people how they can spend their money - you are the online equivalent of a bank - You CAN however deny your services to businesses who violate your TOS...But that's the sensible thing, and you're obviously not a very sensible company anymore.

Gotta Let Them Know
by ferricoxide September 12, 2004 9:34 PM PDT
Simply letting your account lay dormant is not a sufficient response. You have to actually contact them, let them know you're unhappy, tell them that you will be cancelling your account if they don't rescind within time "X", then follow through if they fail to be responsive.

I've already sent them my emails to that effect
It time to ditch PayPal...

Between the freezing of customer accounts for questionable reasons and now attempting to tell people how they can spend their money, it's time to find a alternative.

Time to Boycott PayPal
by ferricoxide September 12, 2004 9:31 PM PDT
I can understand a policy of not allowing using their services for illegal activities. However, restricting financial transactions that aren't illegal. Sorry, that's crossing the line. If they don't reverse this, I will be closing my account.

Paypal's parent EBay allows porn to be sold--how to pay for it?!?
by Razzl September 13, 2004 7:18 AM PDT
It's a delicious irony here--that Paypal's parent company EBay allows pornography to be sold under their category "mature audiences". Will an eBay customer be fined for using Paypal to pay for one of these auctions? And if not, doesn't that put both companies in the worst kind of legal jeopardy? stay tuned...

This will all come down to...
by September 13, 2004 8:29 AM PDT
This will all come down to a law suite. People are not going to allow PayPal to tell them what they can spend their money on. PayPal is not that the police and has no right to tell you what you can and can not buy. Even if the stuff was illegal it is up to the authorities to take care of it not them.

Who the hell do they think they are?

It's my money, and I can do what ever I want with it. Shut down the sellers but who are you to fine me? Are you the police? Did I have a court date? A certified pharmacy? I worked and owned an online pharmacy. The VIPPS is just a pay off. It's all bs! Vipps forces you to put up money to get their seal, they did this to get back on google and to keep the fda off their backs, however congress is banning all US online pharmacies, so every pharmacy soon will be foreign on the net.

Welcome to American, no way is this going to be a good think for paypal.

Hey cnet, please rank all the players in this market, like you do with mp3 players, so us the consumer can pick which service is best.

Personal info secure ??
by vgraybeard September 13, 2004 6:50 PM PDT
I don't gamble, nor do I purchase "adult material" (tho I sure get a lot of offers in my junk box). I wasn't aware that the PayPal police would be digging thru my transactions. While Paypal can be convienent I don't think it is worthe the intrusion. There are far to many other
options available that won't be hacking into my info. Thanks for the headsup.
