Shiver me timbers, it's Talk Like A Pirate Day!

If it weren't for the Internet, it's up in the air as to whether or not anyone would have heard of "Snakes on a Plane," the "free" coffee at Starbucks last month, or those pop artists who owe their fame to MySpace.

Same thing goes for "International Talk Like A Pirate Day." Founded by two guys in 1995 and popularized by humorist Dave Barry's syndicated column in 2002, this bizarre occasion probably would've been a one-hit wonder if it weren't for the Internet's appetite for ridiculous humor. Visitors to the International Talk Like A Pirate Day site are given all the resources to celebrate the September 19th (that's tomorrow!) festival in full, from pirate name generators to personality quizzes, pick-up line suggestions, and links to the Web sites of actual pirate re-enactment groups.

As for me, I plan to give "talking like a pirate" a 21st-century spin. I'm brushing up on my usage of "h4xx0r," "m4d sk1||z," and "pwn3d."
